Sunday July 5th Korcula

Sunday July 5th Slept like babes, up about 7 .30 am, breakfast and then off walking with togs and lavalava on –instead of going around path by sea we went up the steps and past houses and the church-bells seem to ring at 12 noon and then again later in the day. This was real Mediterranean/Adriatic houses –stone or concrete block with rock or tile roofs, grape vines growing over patios, fields of olives and tomatoes. The purple bougainvillea is in full bloom everywhere here. Went and had a swim at the sandy beach with lots of families then walked over to the other sandy beach but didn’t spend much time there as sort of teenagers beach with bar and music and boy racers. Walked back here in middle of the day with lavalavas draped over our heads because it was so hot. Little chapel at the cross roads in the middle of vineyards. Famous local wine is called Grk but what we have tasted so far would indicate it must be an acquired taste.
Later watched the 2nd stage of the Tour de France and then the epic battle between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick for the Wimbledon men’s final and then went around to Café Feral at end of the road for fish dinner –whole fish grilled -huge and expensive –doesn’t seem to be much concept of one fillet of fish!! When waiter knew we were from NZ he told us that Nick Nobilo, the NZ winemaker was from Lumbarda and stays in a house up on the hill behind the restaurant.
