Saturday started magnificently with a walk into the forest at Pontresina to a chamber music concert –this happens every day between 11am-12 noon from June to September-there is a little wooden auditorium and wooden benches and people drift in an out out of the area with their newspaper or walking the dog or with tramping boots on ready to go walking afterwards. There is a core group called Camerata Pontresina with others occasionally –they play a programme with one main work and a number of waltzes and concert overtures –quite emotional the first time you experience this. ( We went each of the 3 days we were there).
Then having gone to Italy for dinner the previous night it seemed appropriate to go to Tarino in Italy also for lunch on Saturday on the Bernina Express which has observation cars with huge windows and which descends down the steep valley through a series of tunnels and spirals and also runs thru village streets. Lunch( accompanied by a bit of throwing around of red wine !!) plus gelato and bit of a walk around then back on train up to station beyond Poschiavo and then an hours walk back to dinner at small family pensione –beautiful simple dinner -barley consommé, spinach gnocchi and rossfleuisch (horse meat fillets- travel is an occasion to broaden the gastronomic mind!!) plus fresh picked berries from their garden. Ruth had taken the car this far so we had another drive back thru the mountains in moonlight.
